Buildings are one of the largest consumers of natural resources, accounting for 39% of all energy use, 40% of raw material use, and 38% of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. NEI works with building developers, owners, architects, and engineers to create healthy, green, low impact new construction projects. We provide a range of owner’s representative and technical assistance services, from project conception through occupancy. We often work on projects for their duration, but sometimes offer more targeted assistance. The scope our New Construction work includes:
- Providing owner’s representative and project management services to groups that lack staff to do so;
- Advising on the hiring of a design team;
- Planning and facilitating green design charrettes to set greening goals;
- Reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with greening goals and criteria;
- Investigating options for renewable energy and developing strategies to fund installations;
- Analyzing the costs and benefits of design approaches;
- Coordinating and managing energy modeling and using early stage modeling to inform design decisions;
- Developing strategies for LEED certification and managing the certification process;
- Positioning projects to receive maximum incentives and rebates from utilities;
- Coordinating compliance and certification through Energy Star Homes;
- Assisting with fundraising for green features and completing grant reporting;
- Training contractors on green materials and techniques, and training homeowners and occupants on using and maintaining green features.
